Welcome to the twelfth edition of Not I, a wordless series appearing every Friday or Saturday in which I share a selection of the pre-owned items currently on my personal favorites list. It’s style experimentation, deep-dive thrifting, and instant fashion-universe-expansion all wrapped up into one browsable unit. Read more about the idea behind the series here.
Today: some people think there are good arguments for why we should believe the Earth is flat. They should stop what they’re doing, and put their energy into the current debate about footwear. This world is turning flat, and getting flatter, now that the shoe and slipper with no heel (or a very low one) is crushing all other shapes out of existence. This emergent flatness comes in different forms, some more and others less flattering. We’re not talking Oxford or flip-flop flat. It’s the flat top sneaker, the classic ballet flat, the Mary Jane flat and — last but definitely not least — the racing, soccer and taekwondo shoe that’s filling the non-chunky void left by Samba’s death. Don’t take my word for it. Look at Dries Van Noten, Carter Young, Foot Industry, Pane World, Puma, Adidas x Bad Bunny and Salomon x MM6 and draw your own conclusion. This edition of Not I offers some special, vintage and affordable options to help you join the Flat Shoe Society this spring and summer.
